FROM HATTFJELLDAL TO MOSJØEN
Experienced fishermen compare Vefsna with salmon fishing in Alaska. The river has been untouched for more than three decades. This gives a very special feeling of wilderness. Around the banks of the river, the trees grow high in a varied terrain, and you can find exciting fishing spots sheltered for everything and everyone. The catch can definitely create an adrenaline rush of the very rare. Here we are talking about a real big salmon river. You can with good reason dream that it hits a ridge of over 20 kilos. The river is full of good fishing spots, and offers many nice pools. The Vefsna watercourse in Nordland extends through Hattfjelldal, Grane, Vefsn and Mosjøen before flowing into the Vefsnfjord. We are talking about 160 km of roaring waterfalls, fast rapids and a proud and long history.
FISHING IN GENERAL
Statskog is the landowner and sell fishing licenses. There are restrictions on the number of yarns. The fish catch usually consist of trout and char in the 200 - 400 g weight bracket. The quality of char is very good even though it is not very large. Stekvassdalen with Stekvatnet, and the river that winds its way into the flat valley surrounded by mountains, is a great experience to take with you. With a canoe you get close to the surroundings and go places difficult to reach by foot. The river is not navigable below Stekvatnet due to foaming waterfalls and rapids. Storelva comes from the Swedish border to the east. It winds its way through a flat and quiet area (Stillelva) surrounded by grass and wooded areas - an area ideal for fishing, canoeing and camping. Further east through Tängvassdalentil to Rönes, there is an old road across the border.
ON THE WAY BACK TO GREATNESS
Vefsna was once one of the countrys best salmon rivers. The salmon parasite Gyrodactylus salaris destroyed the idyllic state in the 1970's. After thirty years of trying, the river is now about to rise to old greatness again. In 2018, Vefsna was opened for salmon fishing.
Statskog is the licensee in well over half of the fishable stretches of the Vefsna river. This mostly apply to the upper parts of the river, from Trofors and up towards Hattfjelldal.
More specifically, this apply to the upper parts of the river upstream of Trofors, where the river divides into two river courses; Auster-Vefsna and Svenningdalselva. Auster-Vefsna extends eastward further up towards Hattfjelldal, where it gradually changes its name to Susna and Unkra. Svenningdalselva, on the other hand, extend further south in Grane municipality, before changing its name to Vasselva and Holmvasselva after river division in the upper part of the watercourse.
HIKING AND FISHING BY RØSSVATNET
Røssvatnet is Norways second largest lake. It is located in Hattfjelldal and Hemnes municipalities in Nordland county, 383 meters above sea level. Røssvatnet was dammed and regulated in 1957, and until then Femunden was Norways second largest lake. Røssvatnet has many nice beaches that invite to excursions and boating. Even if the bathing temperature is not the highest, it is possible to test your swimming skills on good weather days. Boat with outboard motor or canoe can be rented at Stekvasselv farm. The terrain around Røssvatnet is varied and offer many hiking opportunities both summer and winter, from gentle valleys to mountains - peak climbing, and glacier hiking for the experienced.
MORE FISHING LAKES:
DANINGEN
Daningen is one of Hattfjelldal's most attractive fishing lakes, where you can get trout or char of the best quality. There is a good stock of both fish species. Drive RV73 to Hattfjelldal and continue towards Susendal and Harvassdalen. This is where the hiking trail starts, which goes in easy-going, but somewhat marshy terrain. Follow the Nordland route (marked) for about 2 km until the path splits, continue the route northeast until you reach the lake. In summer you park in Harvassdalen and walk about 3.3 km to the lake.
Winter you’d park in Ørjedalen and follow the scooter trail towards the lake, about 11 km.
SØRTJØNNA
This is a typical family lake that is very easily accessible because you can drive all the way to the water's edge. From Hattfjelldal center, follow RV73 towards Sweden, and make a turn toward Elsvatn. Sørtjønna is located just past Elsvatn, about 20 km from Hattfjelldal center. The fish in the water are numerous and not very large, thus the chance of a catch is good. Ground fishing probably pay off best here, preferably in combination with float. The water is also suitable for fly fishing. River Susna is easily accessible in the Susendalen. Here you fish for brown trout and sizes vary a lot. But most fish weigh around 200-400 grams, in addition some 1-3 kg fish are caught annually. Susna is a great river to fish, from quiet areas to slightly more rough currents.
ØVERELSVATNET
Øverelsvatnet / Bijjie Aalesjaevrie (666 meter above sea level) is an attractive fishing lake, where good quality fish may be caught. It used to be pure trout waters, but over the years the char has taken over more and more. Follow RV73 from Hattfjelldal center towards Sweden. At the intersection of Elsvatn, follow FV294 to the car park at Storvoll farm. The trail starts above the farm and follow an old cattle track at the west end of the water. The trail is paved with logs and planks over the wettest parts. First you go through a felling area from the 1960s until you reach the mountain birch forest and continue further through the forest belt. At the end of the path, you will find a bench and a picnic area set for a bonfire.
